Reminder tomorrow is NYC PRIDE - Come march with me and the NYABN [Jun. 27th, 2009|10:50 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

This is a reminder that I will be marching with the New York Area Bisexual Network, come march with us and help with Bi visibility tomorrow June 28th!

We will be in Section 10, lining up at 12:30 PM on 54th St. Between 5th & 6th. Please try to get there before that, at the latest NOON, so we can get organized.

I will try to be there before Noon [11:30-11:45 AM.] Because I am the Group's Marshall, I believe I have to be there much earlier.

Remember that tomorrow will be not only the 40th anniversary of Stonewall but the 4th anniversary of Brenda Howard's passing [she is the BISEXUAL woman who founded the NYC pride march!]

We need a big Bisexual Contingent to remind the world that it was a BISEXUAL WOMAN that started this march! [Google her name]

Tell your friends, SEND your friends, BRING your friends!

Bring signs tell the rest of the GLBT community that bisexuals exists and who Brenda was!

See you tomorrow!

Happy Pride!

Remember that tomorrow is the Day of Silence! [Apr. 16th, 2009|04:18 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

What is the Day of Silence?

The Day of Silence is a day in which people of all sexual orientations and gender identities who support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights take a vow of silence to recognize and protest the silence that LGBT people face each day. According to organizers for the Day of Silence Project (contact information at the bottom of this sheet), "the event is designed to raise awareness and protest the silence faced by LGBT people, and offer tools with which to end the silence."

The 2009 Day of Silence will be held on April 17th.

For more info see: http://www.dayofsilence.org/

Note: a few years back I posted about this suggesting on what to do on the DOS. [I found it at http://www.gsanetwork.org/resources/dos.html it still is up but has 2007 information]

You can make cards or slips of paper and put the following on it to give out:

Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights.

People who are silent today believe that laws and attitudes should be inclusive of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The day of silence is to draw attention to those who have been silenced by hatred, oppression, and prejudice. Think about the voices you are not hearing. What can you do to end the silence?

Carl Walker-Hoover took his April 6, 2009 after enduring constant bullying, including anti-LGBT bullying. Though Carl did not identify as gay, his story is a tragic reminder that anti-LGBT bullying and harassment affects all students. Carl would have turned 12 on the Day of Silence.

Ok I went to the Queens PFLAG meeting today and my friend [info]mashfanficchick showed up! It was nice see her there.

Afterwards I walked her to her Grandmother's place [which is not that far from where the meeting was held.

After that I made my way to Folsom Street East.

As my luck goes as soon as I went about 10 feet outside the subway it started to rain a little.

A short time after I got there, the rain got heavier. Walked around and waited the rain out. After 30 minutes or so it stopped.

I ran into many people that I know including Emily and [info]nyghtowl who I hang out with at the TES table the last hour or so.

Afterwards, they took me to dinner at florent which is closing in a week. [Thank you again!]

SPECIAL ALERT - Call Gov. Patterson NOW! [Jun. 4th, 2008|10:53 am]
[Tags|, , ]

I received this information in an email this morning from Marriage Equality NY <info@marriageequalityny.org>

Please feel free to pass this along to anyone or anywhere you want.    Also feel free to link to this entry.

-Larry-

PS: You can also see the Alert at:
http://home.ezezine.com/855/855-2008.06.04.10.33.archive.html

------------------------------------------------

SPECIAL ALERT

GET INVOLVED- Gov. Patterson is polling support for his marriage decision as opposition takes legal action!

Gov. David Paterson told state agencies on May 14 that New York must recognize same-sex marriages performed in Massachusetts, Canada and other places where they are legal.  The directive should provide gay couples with as many as 1,300 rights afforded to married heterosexuals, including the ability to collect health and pension benefits, being admitted as “close family” in a hospital room and transferring a business license.

On June 3rd, a Christian legal organization says it has sued to stop New York from recognizing same-sex marriages legally performed in other states.  The Alliance Defense Fund says it filed its lawsuit Tuesday in a court in the Bronx. Several Republican state senators are named as party to the suit. The Arizona-based legal group filing the lawsuit has intervened elsewhere in gay marriage and religious freedom cases.

WE MUST STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS NOW!

Governor Patterson is doing a poll on whether people support his decision.  Take 5 seconds to lodge your support, just call 1-518-474-8390.  You will talk to a live person from the Governor's office during business hours.

Just say "I support the Governor's position on same sex marriage," then give them your 5 digit (New York) zip code.

And, after doing that, join us for pride, for our annual wedding march in September (add it to your calendars), and donate so we can do more (like our "walk a mile in our shoes campaign" and our Albany event Monday of this week) to show these groups we will not accept anything short of equality!

Happy Pride!

Today is a "day of silence" for GLBT right, please pass it on! [Apr. 18th, 2007|03:57 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

[I know! I am late in posting this here is my LJ. It have been up on my myspace page for a while]

What is the Day of Silence?

The Day of Silence is a day in which people of all sexual orientations and gender identities who support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights take a vow of silence to recognize and protest the silence that LGBT people face each day. According to organizers for the Day of Silence Project (contact information at the bottom of this sheet), "the event is designed to raise awareness and protest the silence faced by LGBT people, and offer tools with which to end the silence." The 2006 Day of Silence will be held on April 26th.

I found a few URL's and put two of them here so you can get more info:

http://www.dayofsilence.org/
http://www.gsanetwork.org/resources/dos.html

You can make cards or slips of paper and put the following on it to give out:

Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights.

People who are silent today believe that laws and attitudes should be inclusive of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The day of silence is to draw attention to those who have been silenced by hatred, oppression, and prejudice. Think about the voices you are not hearing. What can you do to end the silence?

South African Parliament Approves Same-Sex Marriages
By SHARON LaFRANIERE

JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 14 — Parliament on Tuesday voted resoundingly to legalize same-sex marriages in South Africa, making the nation the first in Africa and the fifth in the world to remove legal barriers to them, according to advocates.

The nation’s highest court ruled last December that South Africa’s marriage statute violated the Constitution’s guarantee of equal rights. The court gave the government a year to alter the legal definition of marriage.

COURT SAYS: SAME-SEX COUPLES DESERVE RIGHTS, LEGISLATURE PICKS THE NAME

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

October 25, 2006 Trenton: The New Jersey Lesbian and Gay Coalition is thrilled by the recent decision of the State Supreme Court which recognizes that providing to “committed same-sex couples the financial and social benefits and privileges given to their married heterosexual counterparts” is mandated under the State Constitution. The New Jersey State Supreme Court has upheld equal rights for the all citizens. By leaving the “name to be given to the statutory scheme that provides full rights and benefits to same-sex couples, whether marriage or some other term, is a matter [left to the legislature]” we look forward to a speedy process that reflects the diversity of New Jersey. We have faith that all fair-minded citizens of NJ agree with the Court’s decision.

Be proud of yourself today!

Today is National Coming Out Day.

Here in the United States, The Human Rights Campaign manages the event under the National Coming Out Project.

The HRC, in partnership with PFLAG, have launched their first ever resource specifically for friends and family — A Straight Guide to GLBT Americans. This guide is a resource that helps map some of the emotions straight people feel when someone first comes out to them; walks people through myths and facts about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans; and outlines ways straight people can demonstrate their support.

My pride day report [Jun. 26th, 2006|09:52 am]
[Tags|, ]

Hi all.

Well as you know yesterday was Gay Pride March in NYC. Was too tired to post last night when I got in.

In memory of my Brenda I carried the new nyabn banner. There was a small turn out, only two of others showed up to help me carry the banner. As I suggested one of them, "J", brought a sign in memory of Brenda. We moved up to march behind Birequest. So it was me, “J” and her BF, "V".

The most moving thing happened when we got the 5th Avenue and 8th street. "Poly" Ben S (the singer) saw us and jumped in to say hi. Well he was wearing a picture of Brenda on his shirt and it almost brought me to tears [well maybe a few]. He stayed just long enough for me to take a few pictures of him. [will edit later after they are posted somewhere].

Another interesting thing happed after the march. We (J, V, and myself) went up town to eat with birequest oa a place on 6 Ave. and 16th Street and when I got there I notice I lost my cell phone. It turns out I must of droped it getting in the cab. We I browwed V cell can called mine. The person who founded it said he would leave it in the donut shop on the corner. And yes when I went there later it was there. And yes there was not "extra" calls on my phone. May he win the lottery the next time he plays it :)

Doing online work today because I have to go to a 2:30 meeting in manhattan (I work in Queens) and it easier for me to leave from home.

I hope that ther rest of pride month goes well for all. And remember that on the 28th will be a year.

-Larry-

PS: J is not out at work and because of her job I am only using letters till I get an ok.

Also if you was there and have pictures I would love to get some.

Bi Pride Idea [Jun. 20th, 2006|10:56 am]

In posting information about the Heritage of Pride march for next Sunday on the yagoo group
"BiRequest" someone [not me] said in part ....

> ...
>
> We know that not all of you can participate. But please give it
> careful consideration. A large, enthusiastic, PROUD bunch of
> bisexual folks makes an important statement to the community. They
> say we're confused? In denial? That we don't really exist? Hey,
> look at this!!!
>
> It is important work. Somebody's gotta do it. We will be educating
> the masses. And it's going to be a lot of fun!

[I replied with the following .... what are your thoughts of my idea my LJ friends:]

I have been thinking of a idea.

Why not carry placards (signs usually on a poll or stick) reminding them
(HOP, et al ) that the pride march was started by a BISEXUAL WOMAN by
the name of Brenda Howard.

Like "We remember Brenda Howard, bisexual activist and founder of THIS
march!"

BTW If you have a copy of the HOP Pride guide, check out page 55 and you
will see the ad that I paid for in memory of Brenda.

I am also thinking of posting this to some of the LJ bi communities.

Feel free to pass my idea around

[Current Mood | calm]

I had a wonderful time today marching in the 14th Queens LGBT Pride Parade and I carried the banner for the Queens Chapter of PFLAG for all but about 2.5 blocks all by myself.

Danny Dromm (the founder of the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee, which sponsors the Parade) spoke about Brenda and allowed me to say a few words.

I also brought many leather pride items for myself and Lesbian/gay pride items for my friend upstate.
