Father John Azzali - RIP

Just got this very shocking news from the "Lavender Latkes" group. Both Brenda and I knew John for many years. He will be missed! My thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends.

Hello Latkes and Friends,

LL is shocked at the loss of a good friend of the community, John Azzali. Below are words about John by others.

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we report the passing of Father John Azzali. Father John died of a sudden heart attack on Sat. Sept. 25, 2007. There will be a public memorial service to honor his life on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7pm at Community Methodist Church
(located at 81-10 35th Ave., Jackson Heights, NY). The funeral service will be private.

Father John was a beloved member of our community. Father John was the minister at Sts. Sergius & Bacchus Catholic Parish and was incredibly involved in many different community
organizations and projects such as Queens Network For Peace and Justice, Pride House, and led Queens Gay & Lesbian United. John was an outstanding friend and advocate for everyone he worked with. His presence in our lives, our communities, our work will be greatly missed. His memory will live on in our hearts and in our stories.

My partner had lunch with John the day he died. Said he seemed so optimistic about his future plans. At least John went quickly. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

This is truly, truly, truly soooo sad. It was an absolute shock. I'd just seen John on Sept. 4 when he led us in prayer at the Eddia Garzon vigil. John was one of the best men in Queens, and did so much for the community. He will be missed greatly.
